Staff Therapist, Student Affairs/Counseling Depart at The University of the Arts (UArts)

The University of the Arts (UArts) seeks a passionate and innovative Staff Therapist to join our Counseling Center to help meet the needs of our artistic students and the UArts community as a whole. The Counseling Center works within a developmental philosophy and a brief solution-focused therapy model, and the candidate must demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse student body within these two frames. Summary: This position is responsible for counseling the unique needs of multidisciplinary artistic students. The Staff Therapist conducts individual and group counseling, triage, intake assessments, and participates in an after-hours on-call rotation, as well as coordinating care with our staff psychiatrist and Counseling Center staff. Additionally, this position provides consultation to various members of the UArts community about student mental health issues, develops and implements educational outreach initiatives, and provides training and supervision for practicum and interning students. The position will report to the Director of Counseling.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides individual and group counseling to undergraduate, graduate, and Pre-College students experiencing personal adjustment, developmental and/or psychological problems.
• Provides emergency and crisis intervention services (e.g., participate in the center’s on-call rotation including evenings and weekends).
• Arranges for psychiatric referrals as needed.
• Assists in the formulation and presentation of community intervention programs/outreach trainings and/or workshops that:
  • a) help prevent problems,
  • b) educate students, staff and faculty about mental health/psychological issues and wellness, and
  • c) teach skills for self-care and community health and safety.
• Consults with university staff, faculty, students, family members and other professionals to assist students.
• Provides training and supervision to pre-professional students, e.g., College Student Personnel Graduate Assistants. Provides educational opportunities for faculty, staff and students to enhance their teaching, training and provision of services to other students, e.g. RA training.
• Is open to working one evening for extended hours.
• Upholds the highest ethical principles and promotes best practices of the profession.

Administrative Responsibilities:

• Maintains appropriate records, notes, files, and statistics.
• Contributes to the office’s operational responsibilities, e.g., exercises appropriate stewardship of center budget and resources, contributes to center-wide goals and projects, contributes to office planning, assists with divisional and university responsibilities, etc.
• Engages in professional development to maintain best practices and meets legal requirements and professional guidelines for practice.
• Engages in both need assessments and service outcome assessments/evaluations to support the effectiveness and efficiency of services.
• Makes appropriate changes in services based on assessment findings.
• Serves on Divisional and University committees as appropriate.
• Other administrative duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselor Education, or Creative Arts Therapies from an accredited program.
  Currently licensed in Pennsylvania required (LSW/LCSW/LPC/LMFT).
• Demonstrates competency in mental health counseling and working with diverse populations.
• Experience working with college-age students in settings such as community mental health, inpatient/outpatient psychiatry, and/or University/College counseling centers.
• Work with multicultural populations and LGBTQ students and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
• Experience with group work, crisis work and outreach/consultation.
• Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, including participating in an on-call rotation.
• Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other various personnel/agencies for the effective delivery of services to students.
• Outstanding interpersonal and relationship skills
• Candidates invited to campus must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview(s); candidates will be asked to make a presentation/case study.
• Preference will be given to candidates with prior counseling experience working with a diverse and multicultural population of students and young adults. Interest in working with visual and performing artists is highly desirable. Candidates should feel comfortable working with grief therapy, crisis intervention, group counseling, and outreach/consultation. Supervision experience working with graduate student trainees is also valued.
